Collaborating with Farmers for Fun and Profit

The US government spends over $6 billion per year in taxpayer funds to support major USDA conservation programs. Conservation programs in the US remain largely voluntary with farmers and landowners deciding when and where to implement conservation on their farms. However, conservation placement is not often strategic, and therefore may not achieve maximum conservation benefit due to a mismatch between practice and site-specific conditions. My research focuses on how geospatial technologies can enable placement of conservation practices on the landscape to reduce the environmental impact of production agriculture without compromising the financial stability of a farming operation.
